about

[STYLSS039]

ONHELL is Angel Rubio-Hale

Words by Jenae Liberty

ONHELL broadens the soul with his latest production, suitably titled "Darkness." STYLSS's 39th release has one's head alternating between "Am I ok?" and "Everything is ok." Seamlessly, ONHELL drags us through an idiosyncratic journey of agony and loss; something endured solely by a human's emotional capacity to delve into downheartedness. And in the department of resonance his listeners are not left behind: ONHELL is from Humboldt but hails out of Oakland, CA, where bass music thrives.

"You shouldn't do that, it makes me sad. It makes me really sad;" this loaded statement implanted as a reoccurring sample overflows with devotion as the introduction. Next, an exceptionally pacifying effect takes over when the warmth of "Mashdi" rolls over; pulsing with whispers and cries accompanied by delicately layered drums. ONHELL's Intensity is kept up in "Dark Skin." The movement swells up through a pushy synth and the break is undeniably awakening. Seemingly influenced by sounds witnessed while traveling in Colombia, the track "Lonely" carries the proper arrangements over a cleanly executed bass. Each sample carefully tells the tale. In the blatantly titled "What Are You Waiting For" the question is incorporated over an ominous synth, reminding us to ask the same of ourselves. The first feature on the album is The Last Artful Dodgr, an imaginative Portland based lyricist. Her vocals close a chapter with near heartbreaking susceptibility in "Excommunicated." Recently returning from a multi-city tour it's clear that this symphonic endeavor signifies an active surge of growth. In the end, Rubio-Hale's "Darkness" is just in time for the impending shadow winter sets upon us.
